The Story Behind Ghoroaa Montreal: A Taste of Home, Far from Home
At Ghoroaa Montreal, we don’t just serve food — we serve memories.
When we first arrived in Montreal, like many others from Bangladesh, we were filled with dreams, determination, and a deep homesickness for the flavors we grew up with. The snow, the tall buildings, the fast pace — it was all exciting, but something was missing: the warmth of a home-cooked meal, the comfort of daal over steaming rice, the smell of mustard oil, and the sound of laughter over shared plates.
We searched high and low for the tastes of home. Some came close, but nothing quite captured that soul-soothing feeling of sitting down to a proper Bangladeshi meal — the kind that tells stories with every bite.
So, we decided to do something about it.
We opened Ghoroaa Montreal not just as a restaurant, but as a place where anyone — whether Bangladeshi or simply curious — could walk in and feel instantly at home. The name Ghoroaa means “homely” in Bengali, and that’s exactly what we strive to be. Every dish we make is rooted in the recipes passed down from our families, using the spices and techniques that remind us of kitchens back in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, and beyond.
From shutki bhuna to ilish macher jhol, from khichuri on rainy days to crispy beguni at iftar, every item on our menu is made with love — not from a cookbook, but from memory.
What started as a small dream has become a gathering place for students missing their mother’s cooking, for families looking to introduce their children to tradition, and for Montrealers from all walks of life who want to explore something new and heartfelt.
At Ghoroaa Montreal, we believe food can do more than fill your stomach — it can connect you to where you come from, and to each other.
Welcome home.
